Writers for the creative but unpopular show will have several episodes to write a proper ending to the comedy, after which it will go off air, Entertainment Weekly reported.
"We’ve mutually come to the difficult decision to make this Ugly Betty’s final season, and are announcing now as we want to allow the show ample time to write a satisfying conclusion," ABC said in a statement. "We are extremely proud of this groundbreaking series, and felt it was important to give the fans a proper farewell.”
ABC honchos didn't give an explicit reason why the show was canceled, but industry observers noted that "Ugly Betty" never drew viewers in great numbers despite experiments with the broadcast schedule.
In addition to the cancellation, "Ugly Betty," now in its fourth season, will be trimmed from 22 episodes to 20.
