Duets, Original Songs as “The Voice” Builds to Final Episode

The final contestants are tantalizingly close to the finish line, and the $100,000 prize and record deal

It’s up to America now.

“The Voice” final four took to the stage Tuesday for one last night of performances before viewer votes will crown one hopeful as winner of the competition, its $100,000 grand prize and record deal.

Beverly McClellan, Javier Colon, Dia Frampton and Vicci Martinez were each tasked with performing one original tune and a duet with their celebrity coach, though only iTunes downloads of original songs counted for votes. Voting by phone and via the show's website ended Wednesday morning.

Here’s how they fared:

Javier Colon:
Coaches have praised Javier’s smooth voice all season, but the musician scored an arguably stronger endorsement from Justin Bieber when he needed it most. The Biebs tweeted his support just hours before Javier’s final performances.

Javier kicked things off with his original song, “Stitch by Stitch,” and dedicated the slow pop tune to his wife and family. “I’m in awe,” Blake said afterward. Other celebrity coaches agreed that Javier had succeeded in making the Butch Walker-produced song his own.

Later on in the show, Javier returned with his mentor, Adam Levine, for a duet of Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror.”

Dia Frampton
Last week, Christina said that Dia had shown the “most growth” of all the contestants on “The Voice’s” first season. Perhaps she should have named her MVP instead of most improved.

Dia’s version of Kanye West’s “Heartless” earlier this season was a hit on iTunes. Blake and Cee Lo predicted Dia’s original tune on Tuesday, “Inventing Shadows,” would again dominate the charts.

After the performance, Adam and Christina mostly sidestepped comments on Dia’s vocals. They complained instead about the mime dancers in silhouette behind Dia during her performance.

"You know what else is going to be distracting?” Blake told his protégé. “When they turn on their phones and you're sitting way above [their records on iTunes]."

Also Tuesday, Blake and Dia performed Tom Petty’s “I Won’t Back Down,” while dressed in matching suits and Ray Ban shades.

Vicci Martinez
Cee Lo continued his quest to flesh out Vicci Martinez’s inner-“warrior” on Tuesday with the pair easily scoring the most memorable performance of the night for their duet of “Love is a Battlefield” by Pat Benatar. It featured Cee Lo sporting a neon pink Mohawk and studded jacket/armor, as well as a team of children dancers doing flips. Still, Vicci stole the show by belting out a full-throated version of the ‘80s hit.

Vicci also channeled the ‘80s with her original song, the power ballad “Afraid to Sleep.”

“You insist on being a big deal. Now you are a big deal,” Blake told her after the show.

Beverly McClellan
After coaches Adam, Cee Lo, Christina and Blake began Tuesday’s show by performing a version of Queen’s “Under Pressure,” host Carson Daly turned to Beverly to ask how she was handling “the pressure.”

“I don’t know,” she said. “I’m here to rock and roll.”

In a surprise move, though, the first song Beverly performed was a seated duet with Christina to “Beautiful,” the pop star’s classic ballad.

Later, Beverly bounded across the stage to her original tune “Lovesick.”

“You killed it,” Cee Lo said in response.

Blake added that, “if music was crack, you would have a serious problem.”

Only one of the performers will be named “The Voice” when the finals return Wednesday at 8 p.m on NBC. Fans can later check out the Top 8 on tour, with six dates confirmed already in cities like New York, Boston, and Chicago.
