Lady Gaga, Eminem Top MTV Video Awards Nominations

Though she may have missed out on a Grammy, MTV is making sure that Lady Gaga won't go home empty handed during awards season.

The controversial pop icon led a star-studded field of entertainers with a record-breaking 13 Video Music Award nominations. She's likely to collect a few Moonman statues, which should more than make up for the fact that she was ineligible for a best new artist Grammy because of the release date of one of her early singles, "Just Dance." The Fame Monster is up for Best Pop Video, Best Dance Music Video and Best Female Video, among others.

Gaga thanked her fans after the nominations were released by MTV.

"I'm so honored for all the little monsters and self-professed freaks of the universe, to have more VMA nominations in a single year than any artist in MTV history. Ironically, I'm even more proud it's an unlucky number: 13," she said in a statement. "A long time ago, the world told me and my little monsters we would never be heard. Together we changed the rules. God put me on Earth for three reasons: to make loud music, gay videos and cause a damn raucous. Thank you, MTV!"

Following on the heels of the ubiquitous Gaga is Eminem, whose comeback album "Recovery," captured the volatile rapper eight nominations. His video for the lead album single "Not Afraid" is up for Video of the Year along with the Fame Monster's "Bad Romance and "Telephone."

"Apparently, MTV doesn't care that I have two massive stadium shows on the other side of the country the day after the VMAs. F me, right?!?!" he said jokingly upon hearing the news. "I mean, I'll be there, but don't expect me to be nice about it."

The race for Best Female Video is especially loaded. Gaga has two entries in the field with her solo single "Bad Romance" and her collaboration with Beyonce, "Video Phone." Katy Perry's "California Gurls," Ke$ha's "Tik Tok," and Taylor Swift's "Fifteen" round out the field. No word on whether or not Kanye West will be allowed in the theater when this Moonman is awarded.

Tween sensation Justin Bieber's "Baby" will line up against Ke$sh's "Tik Tok," Jason Derulo's "In My Head," Nicki Minaj's "Massive Attack," and Broken Bells' "The Ghost Inside" in the Best New Artist category.

The awards show will air at 9 p.m. on September 12.
