Singers Rihanna and Chris Brown perform on stage during Z100's Jingle Ball at Madison Square Garden on December 12, 2008 in New York City.
Brown asked a judge in Los Angeles to lift the order that prevents him from being within 100 yards his old flame so he would not get kicked out of next month’s ceremony at the Staples Center.
The original ruling would make it illegal for him to make it past the door while Rihanna—who was nominated for 6 Grammys this year—is in the building.
Judge Schnegg praised Brown for recently completing a year of weekly counseling sessions.
“Once a week is a lot,” she said, “and you did it in a fine fashion.”
The embattled rapper also has to complete 180 days of community service and remain on probation for five years following the 2009 felony assault charge. Brown was convicted of hitting then-sweetheart Rihanna in the face on the eve of the Grammys in 2009 and sending her to the emergency room.
Schnegg said she will talk with Rihanna’s lawyer before making a final decision.
