“Princess and the Frog” Leaps Ahead at Weekend Box Office

"The Blind Side" and "Invictus" round out the top three.

Never underestimate the power of a princess.

Following two weeks in limited release, Disney's animated fairy tale, "The Princess and the Frog" took home the top spot at the weekend box office, bringing in $25 million.

The reimagined Brothers Grimm story is set in 1920s New Orleans and stars Disney's first African-American princess.

Football flick "The Blind Side" slid down to the No. 2 spot, while Clint Eastwood's inspirational rugby film "Invictus" opened at No. 3.  "The Blind Side" pulled in $15.5 million, bringing its current box office total to $150.2 million.  "Invictus," which cost $60 million to produce, is projected to end the weekend with only $9.1 million.

According to numbers released by the studio, families made up 80% of the audience for "The Princess and the Frog."  The film will fight harder for the family market next weekend when "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel" opens nationwide.
