Golf CEO Apologizes for Racist Tiger Woods Comment

Two days after the golf superstar's rival Sergio Garcia apologized for using a racist caricature in reference to Woods, the head of the European golf tour is now offering up a mea culpa of his own

OK, we know the golf world's full of old timers. But we didn't realize some of them still had views straight out of the 1950s.

Unfortunately, Tiger Woods knows that all too well.

Two days after the golf superstar's rival Sergio Garcia apologized for using a racist caricature in reference to Woods, the head of the European golf tour is now offering up a mea culpa of his own for using the word "colored" in a TV interview about the golfers' feud.

Per the UK's Telegraph, George O'Grady, the CEO of the European Tour, stumbled into his own race controversy when he remarked during a live chat with Sky Sports that "most of Sergio's friends happen to be colored athletes in the United States."

"I deeply regret using an inappropriate word in a live interview for Sky Sports, for which I unreservedly apologize," O'Grady was later quoted as saying.

Perhaps it's not too surprising the 64-year-old executive used the racially charged term, especially considering he was speaking in defense of his organization's decision not to discipline Garcia for making what was ostensibly a racist joke.

When asked at the European Tour Awards on Tuesday night whether he'd extend an olive branch and have Tiger over for dinner, the Spaniard quipped he'd have him "'round every night" and he'd serve him "fried chicken."

So far, no word what Tiger has to say about O'Grady's gaffe. Woods' twitter page has remained mum on the subject and his rep was unavailable for comment.

However, Woods did tweet his desire to move on from the verbal sparring he and Garcia have been engaging in after calling the "fried chicken" comment "wrong, hurtful and clearly inappropriate."

"I'm confident that there is real regret that the remark was made," the sports icon said, adding: "The Players ended nearly two weeks ago and it's long past time to move on and talk about golf."

We're guessing Tiger probably feels the same way about the latest flap.

And for his part, Garcia told reporters on the golf course on Thursday after finishing his round that he thought O'Grady's comments were "unfortunate."
