Mick Jagger's Hair Sells for $6,000

Proceeds from the sale of the hair, which formerly belonged to an ex-girlfriend of the Rolling Stones frontman, will be donated to charity

A decades-old lock of Mick Jagger's hair was sold to anonymous bidder for $6,000, auction house Bonhams said.

Bidders pushed the price to double its pre-sale estimate before the hammer went down on the winning bid of 4,000 British pounds.

The lock of hair, which comes in an envelope bearing the message "Mick Jagger's hair after being washed + trimmed by Chris at Rose Hill Farm," was sold on Wednesday to raise money for the Changing Faces charity, which works with people who have suffered facial disfigurements.

It was formerly the property of Chrissie Shrimpton, an ex-girlfriend of the Rolling Stones frontman and sister to iconic 1960s model Jean Shrimpton. Jagger met Shrimpton when he was still a student at the London School of Economics.

According to the auction house notes, the lock was saved by Shrimpton's grandmother when Mick and Chrissie were staying at her parents' farm. Apparently, on her grandmother's death, the hair passed to Chrissie's aunt and when she died, the hair was returned to Chrissie by a cousin taking care of personal effects.

Jagger (who is due to turn 70 this month) and the Rolling Stones are midway through their "50 & Counting" tour and are scheduled to play this weekend in London's Hyde Park as part of the British Summer Time festival.
