He may be an “Indian Outlaw,” but one thing Tim McGraw does not want to be is the governor of Tennessee.

Contrary to a report by The New Republic, which suggested the country superstar was considering making a run for the governor’s mansion in his home state, a rep for McGraw said politics aren’t on the singer’s agenda – at least not yet.

“This is a rumor,” the rep told Access Hollywood. “Tim has expressed interest in the past, but not for 2010. Something for later in life.”

Back in 2006, McGraw spoke to Time magazine about his aspirations for office.

“It’s innate in me to be a Democrat – a true Southern populist kind of Democrat,” McGraw said at the time. “There’s not a lot of those anymore.”

And if he does decide to put his name on the ballot, McGraw appears to already have the base of his platform set.

“The issues that matter to me are the social safety nets for people, health care, middle-class concerns. We need to take care of the middle class and the poor in our country,” he continued. “The chasm is getting larger between haves and have-nots, and that’s something we need to close down a little bit.”

So while the time may not have come just yet to dive into politics, McGraw said should the chance arise, it would be an honor to serve in such a capacity.

“One of these days, if the opportunity’s there, that’s something I’d love to do,” he told Time. “It’s a high calling to serve the community, and if you can do it, I think you should.”
