Three Things to Know About Do More 24

A community gains its enduring strength from its people, and this June 4, United Way of the National Capital Area is giving you 24 hours to give back.

Their 24-hour fundraiser, Do More 24, supports local non-profits, organizations and companies that strive to make a difference here in our region.

Here's three things to know about Do More 24, which starts at midnight June 4:

How much money can we raise?

In 2014, 11,000 donors gave $1.1 million dollars through Do More 24. You get to decide which organizations matter to you the most and give back to those areas of your community.

Do More 24 hopes to raise a lot more with this year's effort.

Who gets the money?

Again, you get to decide. Because more than 600 locally active groups are represented, Do More 24 has divided the participating organizations, nonprofits and companies into eight sections, including animal welfare, arts and culture, environment and community improvement, education, financial stability, health and human services, religion, and workforce readiness.

You can assist social justice causes with Stand Up! for democracy in D.C. (Free DC), Boys and Girls Club of Greater Washington, YMCA, Latino Student Fund, Aid Our Veterans and more.

Give food or shelter to the struggling with groups such as Bread for the City, SOME (So Others May Eat), or A Friend to the Homeless.

You can help the environment with Chesapeake Bay Foundation and others. Various health organizations, including AIDS United and Stroke Comeback Center, are also represented.

Groups like Girls on the Run, Women in Film and Video and the Women’s Bar Association Foundation are encouraging and assisting women in our area. Foster art, music, and theater with the Reston Community Orchestra, Anacostia Gracious Arts Program, Howard Theater Restoration Inc. and countless others.

Or maybe your looking to help out local animals with organizations such as Fancy Cats Rescue Team or D.C. Paws Rescue.

Any other ways to help?

If you’re overwhelmed by all the different options, you can always give back with your lunch. Several restaurants are participating by giving a portion of sales made on June 4 to Do More 24 during specific times.

Participating Roti Mediterranean Grill and California Pizza Kitchen locations are giving 20 percent of sale to either a pre-selected organization or to an organization of your choice. For all the participating restaurants and shops, check the website.
