Wine Wednesdays: Notaviva Vineyards

When a musician gets inspiration, he or she may buy a shiny new guitar or create a new sound element. When Stephan Mackey dreamed big, he created Notaviva Vineyards, a winery with a musical edge.

Notaviva definitely puts a modern twist on winemaking -- who knew to pair Vidal Blanc with romantic orchestral film scores.

Located in the heart of Loudoun County's wine country, Notaviva (13274 Sagle Road, Purcellville, Va.) also serves as the home to Stephen and Shannon Mackey -- so don't track in mud! Walking upstairs, you'll see the records from artists Stephen has produced for, along with his many guitars near the wall. This is also where live bands play on any given day.

Downstairs you'll find the tasting room/kitchen. Tastings are $6 for up to seven people -- not a bad price for the seven wines you'll be tasting. The wine connoisseur on hand offers surprisingly interesting tidbits about the history of the vineyard, as well as wine in general. Most vineyards don't go into detail. We were even pleased by the scrumptious crackers between tastings.

Hours are typically 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., except for Tuesdays and Wednesdays, when you'll need a reservation. Tip: The Ottentotto is a crisp, clean, dry wine -- worth it.
