Cling to Summer at the Virginia Beach Neptune Festival

Summer's officially over, but you can still enjoy the last warm(ish) days of the year in Virginia Beach, where you can check out the North American Sandscultping Championship.

This contest occurs during the 39th annual Virginia Beach Neptune Festival, a three-week extravaganza that features musical acts, fireworks, surfing competitions, parades and more.  (See the schedule of events here.)

Most events are free except for special events like the Uncorked Wine Dinner ($175), where sommeliers will offer wine and food pairings, and the Symphony By the Sea ($100), a beachfront pops concert.

The sandsculpting event runs Sept. 28-Oct. 7 from 4th to 10th streets at the Virginia Beach Oceanfronts. Another highlight: the Boardwalk Weekend, Sept. 28-30, between 2nd and 36th streets, when you can shop and dine outside while catching live music at multiple points along the boardwalk.
