Grab Your Frozen Cantalopes! It's Ice Bowling Time

Though it's still freakishly warm for this time of year, six more weeks of "winter" were predicted by Punxsutawney Phil, so it's perfectly OK to be thinking about Winterfest in Oakland, Md., about three and a half hours from downtown D.C.

For the fifth year in a row, this tiny town will be pulling out all the stops. Planned activities include bowling on ice (with frozen cantalopes, no less), snowmobile racing, an ice slide and live ice sculpting -- and you can warm up with a bonfire afterward.

In addition to roasted marsmallows, head to local restaurants for homemade chili and potato soup. A wine tasting and traveling dinner will have guests transported from course to course by a horse-drawn sleigh (reservations required, call 301-334-3352).

The snowman-building competition on Saturday (assuming there's snow) will include live music and prizes for the best creation. An eight-foot ice throne will also give guests a chance to be ice king and queen for the weekend.

The festivities run from Friday, Feb. 17 through Sunday, Feb. 19. See the complete schedule here.
