Tuskegee Airmen Remembered With Traveling Exhibit

Take a bit of time out from your Memorial Day Weekend barbecue and/or pool time for a bit of history.

Culpeper Regional Airport (12499 Beverly Ford Road, Brandy Station, Va.) is honoring the country's first group of African-American military pilots with a free traveling exhibit called Rise Above.

You can catch a 14-minute movie about the Tuskegee Airmen on a 160-degree movie screen on a 53-foot trailer (hey, we said this was a traveling exhibit).

The film feature flying footage of the men nicknamed for the designs on their planes -- the Red Tails -- during World War II. You'll learn what the Airmen had to overcome while serving in a military that was still segregated.

The airport will also showcase the Red Tail P-51 and a BT-13 to get a glimpse into the past. If you're not content with just a look, try a ride in either the BT-13 or an L-5.

The event runs Saturday and Sunday, May 26-27 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. The airport is about 90 minutes from D.C.
