Put on your walking boots and step back in time for a trip to one of the oldest residential streets in America, Elfreth's Alley in Philadelphia.
The cobblestone-lined street in central Philadelphia is part of the National Historic Landmark District. The 18th-century street is home to 32 houses built between 1728 and 1836, as well as a museum (124 and 126 Elfreth's Alley) with daily guided tours.
The guided tour leaves from 124 Elfreth's Alley, giving you the house-by-house stories of the alley's early residents and answering questions about their daily life and why alleys and why homes were were built in alleys the first place. You'll also get to tour the house at number 126 -- but there will be no other snooping in the other homes since they're still are private residences (sad face).
The museum is open Thursday to Sunday, from 11 to 5 p.m., with tours at noon and 3 p.m. Tickets are $5 per adult, $2 per child.
Elfreth's Alley is located on 2nd Street, between Race and Arch streets in Philadelphia, about three hours from downtown D.C.
