A State Park With a Cool Edge

If you're going to a state park this year, at least try to visit one where you can cool off. The pool and recreation park at Pocahontas State Park seems like the just the place for that.

Located about two hours from D.C. in Chesterfield County, Va., Pocahontas State Park boasts a family friendly pool and recreation center that is open daily. For even more summer cool off ideas, the nearby Beaver Lake will give you a natural way to chill out. The lake is ample with fish, too, so you can unwind on those lazy summer days with a nice fishing trip ... or two ... or three (hey, there's even a free boat launch for overnight campers!). Or you can just rent your own canoe, kayak or rowboat -- they have those too.

More than five miles of hiking trails are spread out around Beaver Lake, as well as bridle trails (10+ miles) for those equine-minded folks.

Eco-friendly nature programs and Discovery Field Trips are just a few special nature programs offered by the park. Oh, and check out the Civilian Conservation Corps museum at the park, and you'll see what working hard for your money really means! (I'm sure it also tells a lot more than the report I wrote in sixth-grade on the CCC did!).
