Play ‘One-Percenter' at Maymont Estate

This isn't "The Wizard of Oz," but if you follow the yellow brick road, it may (OK, it will) eventually lead you to Maymont, a picturesque Victorian estate located in Richmond

On this American country estate, you'll find the historic 12,000-square-foot Maymont house museum, an arboretum, gardens, and activities throughout the year.

Tour the 33-room mansion for $5 with a guided or self-guided tour (Tuesdays through Sundays) to imagine how the one-percenters lived a hundred years ago.

Surrounding the mansion, you'll find Japanese gardens, a children's farm, wildlife exhibits and a 40-acre nature center that offer a look into the creates native to Virginia, 40 acres to be exact. Bring your camera to capture the 20-foot waterfall that fills the large aquariums that the otters, turtles and fish call home.

You can also hit the easy button with a tram ride around the estate, available for a whopping $3/adult. Hay rides are available June through August).

Admission to the grounds is free at Maymont, although donations appreciated. Fees are required for exhibits and special programs. Hours for grounds, exhibits and gardens are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
