Sleeping in a Corn Crib: This Is a Thing

If someone mentioned you should spend your vacation in an old corn shed, how would you reply to such a request? We say, bring on the maize, because at Stevenson Ridge (6901 Meeting Place St., Spotsylvania), their Corn Crib sleeps three, and comes complete with a wood-burning fireplace, king bed and kitchenette.

The Corn Crib is just one of seven of the 18th- and 19th-century (restored) cottages you can call home for a night or two. The Civil War House, Spy Hill and Servants Quarters are among the other options. Some have fireplaces, private decks and full kitchens; none of the them lack charm.

Among the 87 acres of land at Stevenson Ridge, you’ll also have space for large events and gatherings. The Lodge, a 12,000-square-foot facility (and former chapel) built in the 19th century, can hold 200+ guests under its cathedral ceiling interior, and it overlooks the fishing pond.

If you're bringing quite a group with you, consider the Riddick House, built in 1812. Fully furnished, it features multiple living areas, a lounge/bar area and an upstairs suite. It can sleep six comfortably, and can be rented for small events (75 or fewer guests).

Activities around Stevenson Ridge include wooded walking trails, tours of preserved Civil War trenches, concierge service and fishing on the pond.
