First Lady Talks Childhood Obesity in Philly

Michelle Obama encouraged more community leaders to get involved and sign up for Let's Move, City, Town, or County

First Lady Michelle Obama was in Philadelphia on Wednesday to announce some new "moves" in her "Let's Move!" initiative.

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter introduced her to the stage. "It's always an honor to have the First Lady of the United States of America here for this great announcement," said Nutter.

Speaking from the Lenfest Police Athletic Center on N. 10th Street in Hunting Park, Mrs. Obama talked about the progress that's been made since she launched her program in 2010, but says more needs to be done.

The First Lady announced a new step to help more communities leaders join in the fight against childhood obesity. She encouraged elected officials to sign up for Let's Move City, Town, or County.

The leaders who join must commit to five achievable goals for their community. Mrs. Obama said this isn't a "one-size fits all" type of problem, and this new part of the initiative will recognize that every city will have a different approach.

She also praised Mayor Nutter for the progress he's made in Philadelphia-- installing bike lanes, raising food and fitness standards in after school programs and helping hundreds of local corner stores sell healthier food options like fruits and vegetables.

"It takes leaders like all the folks here on this stage, pushing and innovating and bringing people together on behalf of our children," said Obama.

The First Lady's visit coincides with the U.S. Conference of Mayors' annual leadership meeting.
