CBS entertainment president Nina Tassler said Wednesday that that CBS's new "Hawaii 5-0" would not going to be "your father's" version of the iconic show.
That will mean a lot of things -- there are going to be slicker car chases, cool explosions, real brawling and an updated version of the classic theme song. But the biggest change: Detective Steve McGarrett is going to have some emotional issues, darnit!
It is 2010 after all. Men are allowed to have these things.
The character, classically played by Jack Lord, has been given to Alex O'Loughlin and he will have his own way of dealing with some Oprah-esque issues -- like a tattered relationship with his sister played by Taryn Manning.
"My character was written in humanize (McGarrett)," Manning tells PopcornBiz. "I play his younger sister and she's kind of upset at the world and wants to get closer to her brother."
Scarily, we are talking about emotional closeness. On a cop show.
In fact, the pilot will show how the "Hawaii 5-0" crime-fighting task force gets together and it will also have the emotional focus of a McGarrett family death for emotional ballast. "They both lose their father in the pilot and my character is kind of upset at her family because the only time they get together is when there is a funeral," says Manning.
