Johnny Depp's “The Rum Diary” Offers Up First Pics

From TotaalFilm, by way of /Film comes our first look at stills from the long-time-coming Johnny Depp film "The Rum Diary," based on the Hunter S. Thompson novel of the same name.

Directed by Bruce Robinson, the man behind the cult classic "Withnail & I," and co-starring Giovanni Ribisi, Richard Jenkins, Aaron Eckhart and Amber Heard, "The Rum Diary," is loosely based on Thompson's experiences as a young reporter living in Puerto Rico in the 1950s.

"The Rum Diary" took nearly 40 years to get published, an indication that it saw the light of day more because of the fame Thompson had accumulate, than the quality of the book.

Normally we'd be terrified of such material being the basis for a film, but considering the Depp's close relationship with Thompson, we feel reasonably certain the actor would do nothing he thought would tarnish the great writer's legacy in any way.

Add to that the director and stellar supporting cast, and we should have a pretty entertaining film on our hands.
