Sheridan's Purposeful Poker Strategy: “Drink Lots of Maker's Mark”

This weekend, a sold-out crowd participated in the Chance for Life poker tournament, raising money to combat children's cancer at the City Tavern Club (3206 M St. N.W.).

Last year's champion, Win Sheridan -- who could be surprised with that first name? -- went on to compete in the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas, and this year he returned to defend his title.

"Considering it was only the sixth or seventh time I played poker, I had zero expectations of staying in that long, much less winning," Sheridan said. "It truly was one of the most random things to ever happen to me!"

Of returning this year to try again for the winning spot, he told us, "I'm really not much of a poker player but had a lot of fun, as always."

"If I had any strategy it was to drink lots of Maker's Mark... and I employed that same [strategy] this year. But I guess lightning really doesn't strike twice in the same place!"

Sheridan made it to the fifth table, but was eliminated. Players like Sheridan helped Chance for Life raise thousands for children's spinal cancer research. Last year's event raised more than $100,000.
