Last night, Council member Jack Evans scoffed at the idea that the District will be able to close its $500 million budget gap by raising taxes.

Speaking at his home last night, Evans said there are other ways in which the city could find or save revenue, which may include instituting furloughs for municipal employees.

"People don’t want to pay this government any more money," he said, alluding to a series of proposed tax and fee increases. "We will not solve our budget crisis by increasing parking meter rates and raising taxes on soda and yoga.”

With the Council set to vote next week on Mayor Adrian Fenty's 2011 budget,  Evans has protested the plan by starting a "nickel and dime" collection at his Wilson building office.
