Sen. Mark Warner Won't Run for Governor in 2013

Sen. Mark Warner announced Tuesday he will not run for governor of Virginia again in 2013.

He cited the promise he made to Virginians to serve them in Washington when they elected him to the Senate in 2008.

Prior to his Senate run, Warner (D) served as governor of Virginia from 2002 to 2006, a job he says he loved.

"Being governor was the best job I ever had," he said in a statement released Tuesday.

But he wants to continue his work to fix national debt and deficits, which he said he is increasingly optimistic that Congress will get done.

"But even if we avoid the fiscal cliff, we still have much more important work to do here in Washington: Immigration reform, improvements to education," he said. "We still need a 21st century energy plan and we still have a lot more work to do to strengthen the economic recovery."

Earlier this month, veteran political adviser and former Democratic National Committee Chairman Terry McAuliffe announced he would run for the Democratic nomination for governor.

McAuliffe ran for the nomination in 2009 but lost the Democratic primary to State Sen. Creigh Deeds, who then lost to Gov. Bob McDonnell.

Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling and Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli are battling for the Republican nomination.
