SEIU Endorses Gray for D.C. Mayor

With D.C.’s crucial Democratic primary just weeks away, Mayor Vincent Gray picked up his third major union endorsement in as many weeks, but at least one union may sit out this campaign and not endorse anyone.

The local Service Employees International Union, representing decades of advocacy for 20,000 hospital, government, janitorial and security workers in the District, is backing Gray in part because of his labor friendly actions.

The SEIU noted Gray strongly supported drivers licenses for undocumented workers, as do most of his challengers.

Polls show Gray leads challengers, including council members Muriel Bowser, Jack Evans, Tommy Wells and Vincent Orange as well as businessman Andy Shallal among others.

The biggest union endorsement -- from the 150,000 member Metropolitan Washington Council AFL-CIO -- is not expected until later this month.

Meanwhile, the D.C. police union is near a decision not to endorse anyone.
