Ruling Expected on Bid to Block GOP Primary Loyalty Pledge

A federal judge is expected to rule on a petition by Donald Trump supporters to block the use of a party affiliation statement in Virginia's Republican presidential primary.

U.S. District Judge Hannah Lauck conducted a hearing on the matter Wednesday. She said she would issue an order Thursday.

Three black pastors are suing the Virginia State Board of Elections and the state GOP, arguing that the "loyalty oath'' violates their civil and free-speech rights. They have asked Lauck for a preliminary injunction to block the requirement that voters in the March 1 GOP primary sign a statement certifying that they are Republicans.

GOP leaders last month persuaded the state board to require the pledge to ensure that only Republicans participate in the party's nominating process.
