Recount Leaves Dems in Control of Va. Senate

A recount in a special election for a Virginia Senate seat has been won by Delegate Lynwood W. Lewis, giving Democrats control of the upper chamber.

According to media reports, the District 6 recount Monday confirmed Lewis' win over Norfolk Republican Wayne Coleman in a Jan. 7 special election. Lewis' win leaves the Senate evenly split, with Democratic Lt. Gov. Ralph S. Northam serving as the tie-breaking vote.

Republicans have a solid majority over Democrats in the House of Delegates, but the divided Senate gives Democratic Gov. Terry McAuliffe a bargaining chip in pushing his agenda through the General Assembly.

Lewis picked up 2 votes in the recount to win by 11.
