Ousted Md. Lawmaker Files to Run for Former Seat

Former Prince George's County Del. Tiffany Alston, who was ousted over theft and misconduct convictions, has filed to run for her old seat.

Alston filed her candidacy for the 24th District late Tuesday, just before the deadline.

She will face nine other candidates in the district's Democratic primary, including Darren Swain, the Bowie State University official appointed last year by Gov. Martin O'Malley to fill the seat.

The appointment followed court battles over the vacancy after Alston's suspension.

Alston was removed from office last Oct. after she pleaded guilty to misconduct charges for stealing $800 from the General Assembly to pay an employee at her private law firm.

Her conviction was reduced to probation, and she argues that she should get her seat back because of the modification to her conviction before judgment.
