Washington Monument Closed All Weekend

The Washington Monument will be closed all weekend and possibly beyond after damage to the elevator.

This closure is not due to a mechanical problem, National Park Service officials said Friday evening. A contractor was fixing an unrelated issue when workers damaged the elevator's control box.

The monument has been closed at least eight times since May because of elevator problems. During one elevator outage in May, more than 40 people, including two pregnant women, were trapped at the top.

An earthquake in 2011 caused so much damage the monument was closed to visitors for almost three years.

The National Park Service expects to decide on a re-opening date over the weekend, but they expect it to be back open early next week.
