Longshot Maryland Senate Candidate Energized by RNC

View Comments ()

Maryland Republican Senate candidate Dan Bongino used the Republican National Convention to fund raise. Despite the exposure, his campaign is still considered a long shot.

The last time Bongino was at a political convention he was working. And not as a delegate, either.

"I've never been on the other side of the magnetometer," Bongino said. "Being a Secret Service agent this is actually my second convention."

Bongino is trying to use his service to siphon off support from Maryland Democratic Sen. Ben Cardin. And with tens of thousands of conservative political activists gathered in Tampa this week, Bongino was able to solicit donations from across the country.

"It's been a great opportunity for us," Bongino said. "You know when you're not in the spotlight like some of the other Senate races, being that it's Maryland, and you can come in and make a case as to why we think, not only are we going to win, but Maryland deserves an influx of resources. You have to take that opportunity.

While Bongino is running as a fiscal conservative, he's not as ideological as Republican candidates running in other parts of the nation. Still, Cardin is an incumbent in a blue state, and analysts don t think Bongino has a chance.
