Gay Marriage Won't Affect Majority of Virginians' Vote

A new statewide poll shows that while Virginians are deeply divided on the issue of gay marriage, a majority say the issue won't affect how they vote in November's presidential election.

Of 1,282 registered Virginia voters Quinnipiac University surveyed for five days through Monday, 25 percent said same-sex marriage was extremely important or very important to them.

When asked how President Barack Obama's recent statement in support of gay marriage would affect their support for him, 24 percent said it makes them less likely to back him, 14 percent were more likely to vote for him, and 60 percent said it won't matter.

Twenty-three percent said Mitt Romney's opposition to gay marriage makes them less likely to support him, and 21 percent said they're more likely to back him.
