Democrat Garvey Wins Arlington County Board Seat

Special election to replace state Sen. Favola

Longtime school board member Libby Garvey will become the newest member of the Arlington County Board.

The Democrat won 49 percent of the vote in a special election, defeating Republican Mark Kelly and Green Party candidate Audrey Clement.

Garvey will fill the seat left vacant when fellow Democrat Barbara Favola was elected to the Virginia Senate in November. She'll serve the remaining eight months of Favola's Board term before having to run for reelection.

Turnout hit an historic low, something Republicans hoped could favor their candidate in heavily Democratic Arlington, and it created a closer than expected contest. Garvey captured 7,007 votes, Kelly 6,194 and Clement 1,007.
