Jeffrey DeWitt is set to take over as the District of Columbia's next chief financial officer.
DeWitt was confirmed unanimously by the D.C. Council on Tuesday. He now must be formally appointed by Mayor Vincent Gray. From that point, Congress has 30 days to weigh in on the appointment, meaning DeWitt could start as early as next month.
DeWitt is the chief financial officer in Phoenix. In Washington, he stands to replace longtime CFO Natwar Gandhi, who is retiring.
The CFO operates independently from the rest of city government to ensure that the city doesn't overspend. The position was created by Congress in the 1990s.
DeWitt was confirmed with minimal debate after councilmembers praised his qualifications.
