D.C. Council to Question CFO at Oversight Hearing

The District of Columbia's embattled chief financial officer is scheduled to go before the D.C. Council for an oversight hearing.

CFO Natwar Gandhi has been criticized for failing to release audits that were critical of his office, and the Securities and Exchange Commission has launched an inquiry into the issue. The council passed emergency legislation mandating that all audits be disclosed within 15 days after they are finished.

The council has also raised questions about settlements that lowered the proposed assessments of hundreds of commercial properties by $2.6 billion. Gandhi has said the settlements were necessary to avoid litigation.

The CFO's office is also being scrutinized by federal investigators looking into the district's lottery contracting process.
