DC Council Chairman Gets Grand Jury Subpoena

Kwame Brown

D.C. Council Chairman Kwame Brown received a federal grand jury subpoena for records related to contributions by a prominent political donor.

Brown's spokeswoman said the chairman's campaign received the subpoena Thursday and that Brown intends to comply fully.

At least three sitting D.C. Councilmembers have also received subpoenas: Yvette Alexander, Jack Evans and Phil Mendelson.

The subpoena seeks records of all donations by Jeffrey Thompson, his businesses and his associates. Thompson is an accountant who owns the city's largest Medicaid contractor. Federal authorities searched his office and home earlier this month.

Thompson has not been accused of wrongdoing, but the subpoenas and the searches indicate that federal authorities have undertaken a sweeping investigation of possible corruption and campaign finance irregularities in District of Columbia government.
