D.C. Business Leader Calls for Sales Tax Cut

The head of the D.C. a Chamber of Commerce is calling for a sales tax cut in the city's new budget.

Chamber President Barbara Lang

tells The Washington Examiner

says the city has amassed a surplus in funds -- but did so "on the backs of the business community."

Lang says she wants to see the 6 percent sales tax reduced by between half a percentage point and 1 percentage point for the next fiscal year.

Mayor Vincent Gray's staff says he doesn't want to pre-empt the work of the D.C. Tax Revision Commission, which is studying the district's tax code.

Former Mayor Anthony Williams is heading the commission to help simplify the tax code and make the district more competitive with Maryland and Virginia.
