D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser says she's asked her city administrator to look into the D.C. Housing Authority's practice of flipping single-family homes in its inventory.
Bowser told reporters on Monday that she wants to make sure that the housing authority's practices are consistent with her administration's goal of preserving affordable housing in the city.
The housing authority has been moving tenants out of homes in gentrifying neighborhoods, renovating the houses and selling them to wealthy buyers, the Associated Press reported Sunday. Some of the properties have sat vacant for more than a year.
The mayor appoints members to the housing authority board but has no influence over its policies. The authority is independent and funded mostly by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
