Black Pastors Launch Anti-Gay Marriage Campaign

Group urges Obama to repeal same-sex marriage endorsement

A group of African-American pastors launched a nationwide campaign Tuesday calling on people to withdraw their support of President Barack Obama due to his endorsement of gay marriage.

The Rev. Williams Owens, who is president and founder of the Coalition of African-American Pastors, said the campaign, called “The Mandate for Marriage,” is about saving families.

“The time has come for a broad-based assault against the powers that be who want to change our culture to one of men marrying men and women marrying women,” Owens said at a news conference at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. He added, “They have chosen to cater to the homosexual community, they have chosen to cater to Hollywood, to cater to big money and ignore the people who put the president where he is."

The coalition also warned that President Obama’s support for gay marriage may cost him the election.

“The president has ignored the black community because he feels he has us in his pocket, but we're not in his pocket and because he's black we refuse to give him a pass," Owens said. “I'm not going to stand with you, and there are thousands of others across this country that are not going to stand with you, with this foolishness. I would hope the president would become wise, come to his senses and know that he has made a mistake.”
