Washington Capitals right wing Tom Wilson suffered an ankle injury in Ontario during a fall, the team announced Wednesday afternoon.

The 20-year-old was one of just three rookies to appear in all 82 of his team's regular-season games in 2013-14. Wilson did not see much time (7:56 per game) as he was used exclusively on the fourth line.

The official release suggested the possibility that Wilson may not be ready for training camp or the start of the regular season, depending on the severity. Even with a crowded depth chart at right wing, Wilson is expected to challenge for a more prominent role under coach Barry Trotz as the organization hopes the 2012 first-round pick will ultimately develop into a top-six forward.

“Until more is known about Wilson’s condition and long-term availability, any such plans could be put on hold,” the release said. “We’ll keep you posted as we learn more about Wilson’s condition and his recovery.”

A call to Wilson's agent was not immediately returned.
