In Sunday’s game against the Giants, Chris Cooley broke the franchise record for receptions by a tight end, with his 422nd career catch.
The team made an announcement in the press box, included the accomplishment in their game notes, and made a late announcement on Twitter Monday afternoon.
They did not, however, make an announcement to the crowd at FedEx Field, an oversight that was not lost on those closest to Cooley.
Redskins’ senior vice president Tony Wyllie insists that Cooley’s milestone will receive the proper attention it deserves this Sunday, with various mentions during the home game against Arizona.
“Chris Cooley is one of three current players on our history wall on the club level” he told us. “There is no doubt that this organization respects and admires Chris and his accomplishments. We're going to make Sunday really special for him.”
Hopefully that will be enough to make Cooley fans happy, but if Fred Davis’ performance is any indication, we may be transitioning out of the Cooley era soon.
Davis’ five-catch, 105-yard performance on Sunday makes him a threat to both opponents and Cooley’s starting position.
“I lost about 12 pounds [during the lockout] to get in shape,” Davis told CSN Washington after Sunday’s game. “I wanted to be able to run all day and make plays down the seam. That’s what I did today.”
As for Cooley, he insists that there is room in the house for both tight ends.
"I’ve heard so much talk about ‘Who’s the tight end in this offense?’” he said on Monday. “To have guys that can make plays on offense is what makes you a good offense. So for both of us to be in the game, which we both talk about a lot and both feel like we should be in the game making plays, is going to be huge for this offense.”
We can appreciate the team mentality, but in the end there is only one starter. Just ask John Beck.
