As the Redskins' defensive backs took the field prior to their preseason game against the Browns on Monday, they did so with their hands up. It was a symbol of solidarity for Michael Brown, the Missouri teenager whose death sparked the ongoing turmoil in Ferguson.
"We just wanted everybody to know that we support Michael and acknowledge what happened in Ferguson,'' safety Brandon Meriweather told USA TODAY Sports. "Crazy things happen every day in this world.
"It was all of ours idea, something we decided to do as a group just to show our support.''
“Anytime you get an opportunity to do something like that, it’s something that needs to be discussed, something that you truly need to believe,” safety Ryan Clark told reporters. “That could have been any one of us. That could have been any one of our brothers, our cousins, just anyone.
“We have voices, even though sometimes we don’t like to see it that way, we do have voices. We got the opportunity to do something.”
