Nationals Can Clinch NL East With Victory Against Braves

By defeating the Atlanta Braves 4-2 on Monday, the Washington Nationals whittled down their magic number to two. That means if they can defeat the Braves again Tuesday, they will officially clinch the NL East and therefore a playoff appearance.

“I’m excited for [Tuesday],” Drew Storen told The Washington Post. “I think we’re all pumped. It’s a long road, and to be in this position is pretty special. It’s what you’re aiming for from Day 1 of spring training.”

The Nationals extend their division lead over the Braves to an unprecedented 11.5 games, and after allowing the Braves to capture a division championship largely unopposed last season, Washington has an opportunity to return the favor on its rival's field Tuesday.

Washington would be the first National League team to clinch a division and the second overall; the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim have already secured the American League West.

It will be up to Tanner Roark, who will start Tuesday against Aaron Harang. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m.
