Ian Desmond's Five-Hit Night Propels Nationals to First Place

At hitter-friendly Coors Field on Monday, Nationals shortstop Ian Desmond went five-for-five against the Colorado Rockies, driving in two runs and scoring three more for Washington's 7-2 victory.

Five hits tied a career high for Desmond, who became the ninth player this season to have five hits in-game while "batting 1.000," and the fourth to do so at Coors Field, according to Elias Sports Bureau. He last accomplished that feat in September 2011 against the Mets.

"I just look for the ball and swing as hard as I can," Desmond told reporters. Simple enough.

Even more important than Desmond's individual performance: The Nationals took over sole possession of first place in the National League East after the Braves lost to the Marlins.
