DMV Athletes And Women's World Cup Fever

The Women’s National Team put on quite a show in this year’s World Cup, and it was enough to get some Redskins, Mystics and Wizards to pay attention.

According to Twitter, the game broke the record for tweets per second. Quite a few of those tweets originated from the keyboards of some of our favorite local players.

Some of the supporters were expected, such as Charlie Davies. But it turns out that our non-soccer playing pros were caught up in soccer fever. For those who weren't able to watch the game, simply following these D.C. favorites helped tell the story...

As the U.S. scored the first goal, the excitement was palpable and at least one of the Redskins may have required medical attention...

After the U.S. failed to score the go ahead goal in extra time, the game was forced into penalty kicks, which was eerily similar to the last time the USWNT appeared in a World Cup final, a fact that was not lost on this Redskin...

Alas, the U.S. failed to convert enough penalty kicks and lost the game to Japan...

While most of us were sad to see the USWNT lose, it didn't bother the Mystics' Matee Ajavon...

...and Trevor Booker had other priorities...

Thankfully for all of us, we had the Wizards' Nick Young to put it all into perspective for us.
