The Caps could have put the series away on home ice, sent New York packing. But instead, they were left trying for a third-period rally as the revitalized Rangers controlled Sunday's game from the first 40 seconds and then won, 4-3.

Their playoff series is now tied and returns to New York Wednesday.

The Rangers' Chris Kreider did the most damage to the Caps, scoring less than a minute into the game and then again with just three-tenths of a second left in the first period. Jason Chimera scored for the Capitals in the second, but the Rangers rebounded with two goals in the third.

The Caps' Evgeny Kuznetsov managed to cut the Rangers lead to two with a goal in the third, and a goal from Joel Ward seemed to change the momentum in the third period. But the Rangers were able to hold on to win.
