March 8, 2012 -- Washington, D.C. -- Verizon Center: Sam Jacobson's wish comes true when he meets Alexander Ovechkin, of the Washington Capitals, during the SportsCenter My Wish series.
As part of ESPN's seventh-annual "My Wish" SportsCenter series (in conjunction with the Make-A-Wish Foundation), Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin -- along with other athletes like Philadelphia Eagles DeSean Jackson, Miami Heat forward LeBron James and golfer Rory McIlroy -- spent time with a young fan diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition.
Thursday, Ovechkin's segment premiered as he spent two days in early March with 16-year-old Sam Jacobson, who is still recovering from lymphoma, a form of cancer that originates in the immune system.

Usually, this is the part of the post where I would make some sort of snarky comment, but not this time. For as polarizing as Ovechkin can be, he is an incredibly popular athlete, and seeing him take time to reach out to a young fan is something to be commended.
