Off the Beaten Path: H Street N.E.

The Atlas District is home to the best bars you've never heard of.

The Atlas District is home to the best bars you've never heard of. It's OK to leave the Metro line sometimes, especially when there are big burgers just waiting to be eaten. The H Street NE shuttle has been operating for a week as of today. If you haven't checked out the Atlas Distict lately (or, um, ever), here's a list of stuff to see, visit or stuff your face with, for a campy, kitchsy, edgy delight.

Atlas Theater
1333 H St. N.E.
202-399-7993

The Atlas District gets its name from this historic former movie theater. The complex includes four theaters and three dance studios.

Rock and Rock Hotel
1353 H St. N.E.

OK, so it's not really a hotel. Instead, you're looking at the 9:30 Club's darker, edgier, more obscure rival. In addition to musical acts (Trail of Dead and Tapes 'n Tapes are coming next month), you'll also get to indulge in, um, "experiences" such as Jell-O wrestling and Drunken Jenga.

Horace & Dickie's Seafood Carryout
12th St. N.E.
202-397-6040

Think fried fish slapped on a couple pieces of bread, and mac & cheese if you're lucky. This is a late-night destination that just might be Northeast's version of Ben's Chili Bowl.

H Street Martini Lounge
1236 H Street N.E.

Cocktails, salads, appetizers and wraps are the fare here. Happy hour specials run Mon.–Thur., 5-7 p.m.; Fri. 4-7 p.m. and Sat. 6-8 p.m. (And we thought EVERY hour was happy hour on the weekends...)

The Red and the Black
1212 H St. N.E.
202-399-3201

This New Orleans-style bar/music venue has replaced Lulu's for our Big Easy needs. (Wow, that didn't sound right AT ALL.) Happy hour specials run Mon.-Fri., 5-8 p.m. The beer of the month is Peak Organic Espresso Amber Ale, brewed with locally roasted, Fair Trade espresso. Espresso and beer: Together at last.

Sidamo Coffee and Tea
417 H St. N.E.
202-548-0081

Sip organic, shade-grown coffee or bring home the beans. Discover the origins of coffee culture Sundays at 2 p.m., when you can view a traditional Ethiopian Coffee ceremony.

Napa 1015
1015 H St. N.E.
202-396-NAPA

This restaurant/lounge serves "Northern California-inspired cuisine with a French flair." Lunch, dinner, Sunday brunch and a pre-theatre menu. And of course, a carefully constructed wine list. Think of this spot as the Napa of Northeast.
