Where Spinach Is Hip: DC VegFest

Did you always listen when your mom told you to eat your veggies? Well, good for you, you goody-two-shoes. We thought you might like to know that the annual D.C. VegFest is this Saturday, Sept. 24.

The fest is being held at the University Yard at GW (surrounded by G and H streets, and 20th and 21 streets N.W.), from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Go devote your life -- OK, or at least your afternoon -- to learning about a meatless existence and sampling healthy fare from local restos.

NBC4's Wendy Rieger will be offering opening remarks at 11:30 a.m. Throughout the day, hear from the authors of "Second Nature: The Inner Lives of Animals," "30-Day Vegan Challenge" and "The Bond: Our Kinship With Animals, Our Call to Defend Them."

Also, a vitally important cupcake-eating contest will take place at 12:55 p.m., sponsored by Sticky Fingers Bakery (and if you've never had vegan cupcakes, you don't know what you're missing).

Food vendors include Amsterdam Falafel Shop, Cafe Green, Dama Ethiopian and Sunflower Vegetarian Restaurant. You can also check out organic health and beauty products, and learn more about earth-friendly causes. Look at you, being such a do-gooder!
