Looking for a guy to put a ring on it, ladies? America's first lady has some advice -- forget about "cute."

"Cute's good. But cute only lasts for so long," Michelle Obama says in December's Glamour, the glossy's "Women of the Year" issue.

Obama says women should choose a mate by looking at their partner's "heart."

"Don't look at the bankbook or the title. Look at the heart. Look at the soul . . . When you're dating a man, you should always feel good."

Obama, 45, told interviewer Katie Couric that she maintains balance in her life, despite the demands of motherhood and her position, by learning to "invest" in herself.

"I have always tried to put my kids first, and then . . . put myself a really close second, as opposed to fifth or seventh. "

The first lady also talks about the public's long-running fascination with her wardrobe selections.

"People have a right to their opinions, particularly when you're the First Lady," she says. "So I can't be surprised that people are interested. But I've tried to be at peace with the choices that I make first, and then be open to everyone else's reflection."

On the Glamour cover she's in her own drop-waist, red cocktail dress with a modified ballskirt and a chunky, bow-inspired necklace. The outfit was from her own closet, and no designer will be credited in the magazine.

The issue is out Nov. 10.
