Listen, we know about all those "Xena" Warrior Princess" VHS tapes in the back of your closet. It's OK. You don't have to be ashamed anymore. The Darwin Year Film Series is made for people just like you.

And the Web site just makes it all sound so darn good:

This seven-week film series will feature evolutionary monsters and morality, degeneration, extinction and perfection; clashes between evolutionary theory and religious belief; human meddling with the "natural" course of evolution; and lots of scientists, dinosaurs, supermen and cavewomen!

Wow, cavewomen!

Tonight's showing is "One Million Years B.C." (1966), a typically color-saturated flick aptly filled with super close-ups on toy rubber dinosaurs. More importantly, though, it stars a scantily clad Raquel Welch. And you might recognize the movie poster -- because it's the one that Tim Robbins' character hung in his prison cell in "The Shawshank Redemption." See, that instantly turns it from creepy to heart-wrenching, OK?

Other showings in the series include episodes of "The Outer Limits" and "Star Trek," and naturally, "Planet of the Apes." Because you can't talk Darwin without facing a bellowing Charlton Heston.

The fest runs through Oct. 28, with showings on Wednesdays at both noon and 6 p.m. at the National Library of Medicine (NIH) Lister Hill Auditorium (8600 Rockville Pike, Building 38A, Bethesda).
