Redskin Chris Draft Hosts “Blind Side” Screening

Free Showing to Benefit Children’s Literacy Skills

Redskin Chris Draft is a pro athlete who knows the importance of a good education. Tonight, the Redskins linebacker and Stanford grad hosts a free movie screening at THEARC Theater (1901 Mississippi Ave. S.E.), as part of the launch of his new Project Blind Side.

Draft aims to tie Project Blind Side into the Department of Education’s Let’s Read, Let’s Movie initiative.

What's this mean for you? At 4:30 p.m., catch a free screening of "The Blind Side," the true story of Baltimore Ravens tackle Michael Oher, who was adopted, given a formal education and chosen as the Baltimore Ravens first-round selection in the 2009 NFL draft. The film received an Oscar nomination for Best Motion Picture of the Year, and Sandra Bullock won Best Actress for her portrayal of Oher's adoptive mother.

Post-screening, stick around as Draft, Joe Briggs of the NFLPA and Chevonne Mansfield, the assistant director of sports information at Howard University discuss the importance of children's literacy.

Every child at the screening will receive a copy of the book "The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game" -- part of Draft's project is to get a book ito every kid's hands, starting with the D.C. area.

Kids can read the book and submit an essay describing what they have learned by Aug. 15. Ten finalists with the best submissions will be chosen, and the winner will win a day with the linebacker himself, as well as other great prizes.

Meet a local celebrity and catch the feel-good movie of the year, for a great cause. All you need to do is RSVP.
